Empathy Is Operational

AI is taking on more of the work inside companies, but the decisions about people still land on a manager's desk. Business Computing Journal profiles First Factory COO Don Gregori and his case that empathy is the leadership skill AI can't take over.

Drawing on his book, The Emergent Leader: A Guide to Brand Building, Leadership, and Self-Mastery, Don argues that empathy isn't a trait you either have or don't. "Real empathy is operational," he says. It means knowing what your people are capable of, what worries them and what drives them, and it is a skill you build. The book breaks that work into 61 short chapters, each ending with a one-line takeaway and a concrete action step, written for founders, first-time managers and seasoned leaders working through AI-driven change.

Don Gregori is the Chief Operating Officer of First Factory, a multinational software solutions provider based in New York with nearshore operations in Costa Rica. A certified AI Business Leader, Don brings over 25 years of experience helping businesses from startups to Fortune 500 companies navigate product development, digital transformation, and AI adoption. He is a contributing author to The AI Journal and the author of The Emergent Leader, releasing June 16, 2026.
