First Factory was founded by Jason T. Roff in 2000. The idea of having an open, shareable workspace for software engineers to cultivate ideas and excel at major projects was inspired by an Andy Warhol concept. His famous creative spaces, each referred to as “The Factory,” gave Jason a vision for the perfect work environment.
Location
Fueled by a love of development and wanting to find the perfect office location, Jason decided to focus on an area that excelled in education and was closer to the US than the offshore business models. This is where Costa Rica came into play.
As a country that is proud of its education, Costa Rica boasts an impressive pool of talented engineers and software creators. After seeing the dedication, passion, and drive of its residents interested in software engineering, Jason decided to open the development workspace in Heredia. With its convenience in time zone (1 or 2 hours behind Eastern Time) and proximity (5 hour flight from NY), Costa Rica is a top choice when choosing a LatAm software development partner.
Growth
Starting as a .NET development shop with four employees, First Factory spent the early years refining how we differentiate from other software vendors and developed our secret sauce in identifying, managing, and motivating talented engineers and software craftspeople. We have built a strong reputation as one of the best employers in Costa Rica, and our low turnover and Lifetime Employee Net Promoter score of 77 are a testament to our commitment to our team.
Over the years, we have expanded our talent set across numerous technologies as well as the additions of UI/UX design, manual and automated QA, DevOps, project management and business analysis. Today, First Factory has over 230 team members in Costa Rica, a US presence in NYC, and motivated remote employees throughout the country. We have been recognized on the Inc Magazine’s Inc 5000 list of fastest growing companies three years in a row.
